Two-day Rooihaas Hiking trail
The rooihaas hiking trail begins and starts in Venterskroon, an historical goldmining village in the heart of the Vredefort Dome, 120km SW from Johannesburg in the NW province.
On arrival one can visit the information were one can watch the Dome DVD and learn more about the interesting geology and history of the area. If arrival is to late on the 1st day one can arrange to visit the info centre early the next morning before starting the hike.
Both overnight facilities have a gas stove, basic kitchen utensils, braai facilities, warm water and flush toilets. Geusts must bring their own bedding and cutlery.
Day1 - Arriveer Venterskroon Base Camp
Day2 - Hike to Boplaas / Bundu (12km)
Day3 - Hike back to Venterskroon(9km)

Old Mine Route (day trial)
The old mine route starts at the Venterskroon Information centre where a short 12min DVD about the meteorite impact can be watched. There one can also to learn more about the rocks and interesting history of the area. There is the option of driving to the ox wagon trail from where the official hike starts, otherwise we hike through the historical village which has a few tales to tell. The hike is 6km's and takes you through old gold mine tunnels from the late 1800's. It is not strenuous at all, but has very interesting stories and a bit of adventure through the tunnels. The trail provides good oppurtunites for bird watching and flora identification, as it is conducted with one of our knowledgeable guides.

* Please note that guides are compulsory on this trail, it is to ensure your fun and safety. It also gives the visitor the opportunity to really understand all the interesting happenings in the Vredefort Dome World Heritage site.
* For those that want to visit us for a full day are welcome to make use of the braai facilities Venterskroon, firewood and drinks are available from the shop.
* We also offer full day packages where we provide a lunch. After lunch you can partake in one of our other activities, maybe a drive to some interesting places in the Dome or a gentle paddle in a Mohawk canoe on the Vaal River . Please contact us for further details.
ROOIHAAS/KRUIN COMBINATION (Day trail)
The route starts at Venterskroon with a moderate climb to the plato from where views of the Vaal River can be seen, there are abandoned matabale ruins on the plato as well. From there it is downhill with a short summit to conquer before reaching Venterskroon. The route takes you to the outer ridge of the inner core which gives one an insight on the brute force of the meteorite impact. The route is well marked and a map is provided.

Please note that no one will be allowed on the routes if no indemnity has been signed. Guides are available at R150p/day. The option to make use of the braai facilities and to partake in another activity is available for all routes.
